A new book, ‘Galapagos – Both Sides of the Coin’, features research carried out by the Galapagos-based Migramar research team, made up of scientists from the Charles Darwin Foundation, Galapagos National Park Service and University of California Davis.
The book, written by former executive director of the Charles Darwin Foundation, Dr. Graham Watkins, and acclaimed wildlife photographer Pete Oxford, highlights both the beauty and the conflicts surrounding the islands.
Oxford took part in two shark tagging cruises with the research team, and was able to record the process of applying satellite tags to hammerheads, as well as obtain underwater images of tagging a whale shark.
The book focuses on key conservation-research projects, including the Migramar shark project, and provides valuable insight into some of the challenges facing the islands today – uncontrolled tourism expansion, leading to increased demand for limited resources and resulting in a degradation of the natural environment.
