Whale shark tagged at Darwin

November 29th, 2008

A 10 m long female was tagged at Darwin Island in November 2008 during our bi-annual expedition to the northern part of the Galapagos archipelago.

Special tag for the whale shark.

The research party also managed to tag 10 more hammerheads with coded tags and carried out the tracking of a hammerhead shark for 48 hrs.

The hammerhead moved to a seamount a few miles offshore from Wolf, where it spent most of the night and returning back to the island before dawn.

The whale shark was tagged using the same method as for hammerheads and Galapagos sharks. Photo: James Ketchum.

The following day we ran into the whale shark again, and Pete Oxford was able to take this picture of the tag. Photo: Pete Oxford.
