The Sea Turtle Flagship Program leverages the role of sea turtles as flagship species for marine ecosystems on a global scale. We combine scientific research, communication and outreach, and multiple networks of diverse people from around the world to enhance conservation efforts targeting sea turtles and their habitats.
Specifically, we coordinate SWOT – The State of the World’s Sea Turtles, which is a partnership among Conservation International (CI), the IUCN Marine Turtle Specialist Group (MTSG), Duke University’s OBIS-SEAMAP, and an ever-growing international team of local organizations, scientists and conservationists.
Together, this powerful group—the SWOT Team—seeks to create a permanent global network of specialists working to accelerate the conservation of sea turtles and their habitats, pooling and synthesizing data, and regularly sharing the information with audiences who can make a difference.
Born out of the necessity to generate a global perspective of sea turtle status able to inform strategic conservation action, SWOT is the first and only effort of its kind.
Work with Migramar
We work in-depth in the Eastern Pacific region on several sea turtle conservation and research initiatives involving different species in various countries.
We work directly with Conservation International’s Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape initiative to coordinate sea turtle work in the four partner countries and within the broader Eastern Pacific region.
We are working with Migramar to leverage the collective efforts of researchers working on sharks and sea turtles to better understand how migratory marine species use ocean habitats and to improve management schemes in the ETP.
